More Than a Chicken Coop: Reflections from Guatemala
A week in Guatemala reminded us that meaningful ministry is about more than completing projects. Through building sustainable chicken coops, sharing meals, and strengthening partnerships with Heart & Hope for Guatemala, we discovered once again that lasting Kingdom impact is built one relationship at a time.

There is something about serving alongside people rather than simply serving for them that changes the way you see ministry.
This spring our Untether Life team returned to Guatemala to spend a week serving with our incredible ministry partners at Heart & Hope for Guatemala, and once again we were reminded that some of the most meaningful Kingdom work is not measured by the projects we complete but by the relationships we build along the way.
One of the highlights of our week was participating in Heart & Hope's chicken coop program, an initiative that provides families with a sustainable source of food and supplemental income. While our hands were busy digging post holes, carrying lumber, and assembling coops, what stayed with me most had very little to do with construction. It was the opportunity to step into someone's story for a little while, to hear about their family, share in their hopes, and witness the dignity that comes from creating opportunities rather than simply meeting immediate needs.
That has always been one of the things I appreciate most about Heart & Hope's ministry. Their work is centered on long-term transformation, recognizing that every family has God-given gifts and the capacity to flourish when they are equipped with the right tools, encouragement, and support. The chicken coop itself is simply one piece of a much larger story.
Some of the most memorable moments happened when we gathered around tables to share meals, exchanged stories despite language barriers, talked of ways to expand their ministry efforts, laughed often, and discovered once again that hospitality has a remarkable way of making strangers feel like family. There is something sacred about sharing a meal with people, because around the table relationships are formed that no amount of construction work alone could ever accomplish.
Those relationships continue to be one of the greatest blessings of returning to Guatemala. Instead of arriving as visitors each time, we are returning to friends. We remember names, celebrate answered prayers, hear about new challenges, and continue building trust that is only grown through showing up. That kind of partnership is something we deeply value at Untether Life because lasting ministry is rarely built during a single trip. More often, it is cultivated through consistency, humility, and a willingness to keep coming back.
One of the unexpected gifts of this year's trip was realizing that our partnership doesn't have to pause when we board the plane home. As we spent time talking with the Heart & Hope team, conversations turned toward ways we could continue serving families from here in the United States. Together, we began working to create a library of short educational videos that can be shared through a dedicated WhatsApp channel with families who have received chicken coops. These practical lessons will help reinforce healthy chicken care, answer common questions, and provide continued support to Heart & Hope as it builds this co-op project.
As those resources continue to grow, we also hope to expand beyond poultry care into practical business education that helps families steward and grow what they have been given. Simple lessons on budgeting, planning, reinvesting profits, and caring well for a small business have the potential to strengthen not only individual households but entire communities over time. It has been exciting to watch how one week of serving opened the door to ministry that can continue throughout the year, reminding us that while presence will always matter, technology can become another meaningful tool for discipleship, encouragement, and empowerment.
Because of the incredible response to this year's trip, we are excited to announce that we have added another week-long Guatemala mission experience this November. We cannot wait to introduce another team to these ministry partners, these communities, and the beautiful work God is doing through Heart & Hope for Guatemala. As I look back on our week together, I realize the story was never really about building chicken coops. It was about investing in people, strengthening partnerships, and discovering once again that when we faithfully offer the gifts, skills, and opportunities God has placed in our hands, He has a way of multiplying them into something far greater than we could have imagined. Sometimes ministry looks like building a chicken coop. Sometimes it looks like sharing a meal, creating an educational resource, or simply returning to people who have become dear friends. Every one of those moments matters because each one reminds us that the Kingdom of God is built one relationship at a time.
