What is an Appalachian mission trip?

An Appalachian mission trip is a short-term service experience that partners with communities throughout the Appalachian region to meet practical needs while building lasting relationships. At Untether Life, our Kentucky mission trips focus on serving alongside local leaders and organizations already invested in their communities. We believe the greatest impact comes through partnership, humility, and returning year after year.

Why does Untether Life serve in Kentucky?

Untether Life serves in Linefork, Kentucky, a rural Appalachian community where we partner with local churches and nonprofit organizations to support families through practical service, community outreach, home visits, food distribution, children's programs, prayer ministry, and relationship-building.

Rather than creating our own programs, we come alongside trusted local partners and ask how we can strengthen the work they are already doing.

Where does Untether Life serve in Kentucky?

Untether Life serves in Linefork, Kentucky, in partnership with the Dr. Mary Bennett Foundation and other local ministry partners who have faithfully served the community for many years. Together, we support ongoing outreach efforts that meet practical needs, encourage local families, and strengthen relationships throughout the region.

Rather than creating our own programs, we come alongside trusted local partners to support the work they are already doing, allowing our teams to make a meaningful contribution while investing in long-term relationships within the community.

What do volunteers do during a Kentucky mission trip?

Every Untether Life mission trip is designed around the needs identified by our trusted local ministry partners, so no two trips are exactly alike. Depending on the season and the needs of the community, our teams may visit families in their homes, pray with residents, encourage local churches, distribute food boxes and essential supplies, assist with home repairs and community projects, lead camps and activities for children and families, and share meals while building meaningful relationships throughout the community.

While these projects are important, we believe the greatest impact often comes through the relationships we build. Whether you're sitting on a front porch listening to someone's story, praying with a family, working alongside a homeowner, or sharing a meal together, you'll discover that ministry is about far more than completing a project—it's about seeing people, loving them well, and faithfully serving wherever God has called us.

Every Kentucky mission trip combines practical service with discipleship, creating opportunities to experience ministry that is deeply relational, personally transformative, and rooted in long-term partnership.

What makes Appalachia unique?

Appalachia is a region rich in history, culture, resilience, and deep community roots. While many people don't realize it, there are rural communities within Appalachia that face challenges often associated with developing regions, including limited access to healthcare, food, employment opportunities, transportation, and other essential resources.

Untether Life serves in Linefork, Kentucky, because we believe you don't have to travel across the world to find communities in need of hope, encouragement, and practical support. Just as we serve our ministry partners in Guatemala, we are committed to coming alongside trusted local leaders in Appalachia to build relationships, meet practical needs, and support the work God is already doing there.

Can families participate?

Absolutely! In fact, we love seeing families serve together. We believe mission experiences can strengthen family relationships while helping children discover at an early age what it looks like to love and serve others in practical ways.

We welcome families with children ages 5 and older, and we intentionally include age-appropriate opportunities for everyone to participate. Whether it's helping distribute food boxes, serving at children's camps and family programs, visiting with local residents, assisting with community projects, or simply building meaningful relationships, every family member has a valuable role to play.

We also offer the opportunity to curate family-focused mission trips for churches, homeschool groups, or multiple families who would like to serve together. We'd love to help create an experience that fits your group's unique goals while serving the people of Linefork and the surrounding Appalachian communities.

Can churches bring mission teams?

Absolutely! We'd love to partner with your church. Whether you're sending a youth group, adult ministry, prayer team, men's or women's ministry, or a multi-generational team, we'll work with you to create a meaningful mission experience that fits your church's goals.

We especially encourage churches to consider making Kentucky an ongoing ministry partnership rather than a one-time trip. By returning year after year, your team has the opportunity to build lasting relationships with our local ministry partners and the families they serve, allowing your church to witness the long-term impact of investing consistently in the Linefork community.

Whether your church is sending its first mission team or looking to establish an annual outreach partnership, Untether Life would be honored to walk alongside you every step of the way. From planning and logistics to ministry coordination and in-country leadership, we'll help your team focus on serving while we handle the details.

How do I register?

Getting started is easy! Simply reach out through our Contact Us page, and Ginny will personally get in touch with you to schedule an initial Zoom meeting. Once you're ready to move forward, we'll guide you through the registration process and provide everything you need to prepare for your trip, including payment information, important deadlines, a packing guide, travel details, and team resources.

We believe every mission journey begins with a conversation, and we'd love the opportunity to hear your story and help you take your next step.

Why does Untether Life return to the same community time and again?

We believe lasting Kingdom impact is built through faithful, long-term relationships—not one-time visits. By returning to Linefork year after year, we're able to strengthen our partnerships with the Dr. Mary Bennett Foundation, encourage local churches, walk alongside families, and witness the ongoing work God is doing in the community.

Rather than arriving with our own agenda, we come alongside trusted local ministry partners to support the work they are already leading. Each visit allows us to continue relationships that have been built over time, respond to changing community needs, and serve in ways that are both meaningful and sustainable.

We believe missions isn't about checking a destination off a list. It's about showing up consistently, serving faithfully, and becoming part of the story God is writing in a community. That's why we return—not because the work is finished, but because relationships grow stronger with time.

Where do teams stay?

Absolutely! We'd love to partner with your church. Whether you're sending a youth group, adult ministry, prayer team, men's or women's ministry, or a multi-generational team, we'll work with you to create a meaningful mission experience that fits your church's goals.

Why choose a domestic mission trip?

A domestic mission trip reminds us that the mission field isn't always across an ocean—it can be just a day's drive away. Throughout the United States, there are communities facing poverty, isolation, food insecurity, and limited access to resources, all while longing for hope, encouragement, and genuine relationships.

Choosing a domestic mission trip allows you to serve in a meaningful way without the added barriers of international travel. It's an opportunity to build relationships, support trusted local ministry partners, and discover that God is at work both around the world and right here at home.

At Untether Life, we believe missions isn't defined by distance—it's defined by obedience. Whether we're serving in the mountains of eastern Kentucky or the villages of Guatemala, our calling is the same: to love people well, meet practical needs, and faithfully follow where God leads.

How can I support the Kentucky ministry if I can't travel?

You don't have to join a mission team to make a meaningful impact in eastern Kentucky. Throughout the year, there are many ways to support the work being done in partnership with the Dr. Mary Bennett Foundation and the families they serve.

Financial gifts help provide food boxes, home repair materials, children's ministry supplies, community outreach resources, and other practical needs identified by our local ministry partners. We also periodically collect requested items that our teams deliver directly to the community during each trip.

If you'd like to donate supplies or learn about our current needs, simply reach out through our Contact Us page. We'd be happy to share our current wish list and help you find a meaningful way to partner with the work God is doing in Linefork.

Whether you give, pray, donate supplies, or encourage someone who is serving, you become part of the ministry and the lives being changed through these partnerships.
